Assistant Professor
Department of Religion
Amherst College

Author of Constantinople: Ritual, Violence, and Memory in the Making of a Christian Imperial Capital (University of California Press, 2020).

I am a cultural historian of religion in the ancient Mediterranean, working primarily in the late antique east. My research focuses on social performances (ritual practice, pilgrimage, homilies, and historiography) and competition. I am currently working on a study examining the reception of the fifth-century Ecclesiastical Histories, particularly focusing on episodes of conflict and mutilation.
